BELOVED, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1st John 4:7 & 8 This is plain and simple. There's no telling us to love only certain people. We don't see any hint of God rejecting us. Not even those who are not loving, thus not knowing Him, yet.
God, Himself, IS love. It says here that everyone who loves is born of God. That's quite a statement. We all know that pre-christians can certainly love and love well even. Just think on this for a bit. God is not trying to shut anyone out. If we love at all we are carrying His very nature in us. This, in and of itself, should help us to get rid of any "us and them" thinking and just love!
Knowing what the fruits of love are is exceedingly helpful when observing our own day to day living. Do I bear the fruit of love? One great place to find out if we are operating in this love and bearing it's fruit is in that scripture that's always used in weddings; 1 Corinthians 13:4 - 7. Try meditating on this passage of what love is and isn't. We can see if what's coming from us is the fruit of love (God) or if we need to sit at the feet of Love some more before being around others. |
